Do clouds affect the color of the sky?
The sky's hue can be influenced by clouds in two ways. First, the clouds may be semi-transparent, which
would make the blue sky in the backdrop visible through the clouds, giving the sky a darker
effect. Second, the foreground cloud overwhelms our eye due to the contrast with the backdrop
(blue sky or more clouds). The clouds seem brilliant pearly white because the sunlight
inside them scatters forward toward sky watchers on the ground. In addition, the sunlight
is diffracted by the particles inside the thin clouds, creating iridescent highlights.
